3 Ways to Know That You Need to Schedule Air Duct Cleaning

The fall is a period when people often schedule important HVAC services, such as regular maintenance for the heating system and replacing an aging air conditioner after a long summer. One HVAC task that you might think of arranging for this fall is to have professionals clean the air ducts. You don’t need to have this service done every year, but if more than a few have passed since the last time you arranged to have professional duct cleaning, now is definitely the time to consider getting it taken care of.

Here are 3 ways to help you know you are overdue for duct cleaning:

  • AC and heating bills are rising: If you’ve noticed that you are paying far more to run your forced-air heater and air conditioner than you normally do, and it isn’t because of increased use, the problem might be that the build-up of debris in the ductwork is placing too much resistance against air flow.
  • Allergy and asthma symptoms are increasing: Are there people living in your household who suffer from allergies and asthma? When they start to experience an increase in symptoms, the problem may stem from excessive amounts of dust, pollen, dander, and dust mites inside the ducts that are being blown around whenever the HVAC system comes on.
  • The “Brute Force Method”: Here is a way to get direct information—visual information—about the condition of your ductwork. Go to one of the supply vents in your house and unscrew the register or grill from it. Now reach down inside with a digital camera, such as your smart phone. Take a flash photo of the interior. Look at the image you captured: do you see something that looks like the lint catcher in a laundry machine after running a full load? Then your ducts are too dirty and it’s time to have them cleaned.
